Nordic Naturals Pet Cod Liver Oil Review - mybrownnewfies.com

Nordic Naturals is a green, sustainable company that has been setting the standards for omega excellence since 1995. Nordic Naturals prides itself on producing quality, non toxic, fish oil by sustainable fishing practices.

Nordic Naturals makes products for both humans and pets and for this particular review I was using the Pet Cod Liver Oil For Dogs on Sherman’s food.

I was pretty exciting to do this review because I am always looking for safe ways to supplement the boys to support healthy skin and coat, joint heath and of course heart health.

Besides providing the above mentioned benefits of cod liver oil, it can also help support cellular health, immune system health, brain development and maintenance, and eye development and maintenance.

Traditionally, Norwegians have used cod liver oil for its nourishing and healthful benefits. It is an ideal source of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, as well as naturally occurring vitamin A. Nordic Naturals Pet Cod Liver Oil continues this tradition by providing your dog and cat patients and companions with these same important nutrients.

Nordic Naturals Pet Cod Liver Oil is derived exclusively from wild Arctic cod (Skrei), from the Norwegian Sea off the Lofoten Islands near Bodø, Norway.

My only concern when trying out the Pet Cod Liver Oil was the amount of Vitamin A that was in the product. Vitamin A is fat soluble vitamin that is stored  in the fat cells of dogs and too much Vitamin A can lead to toxicity and while very rare, may cause bone issues and/or organ damage.

Now, you guys know me and I would never put my dogs in any type of danger, so I talked with the vet and she told me that Vitmain A toxcity is rare and as long as you know the amount of Vitamin A that you are giving, because it is present in dog food, it would be fine.

I also contacted Nordic Naturals about the Vitamin A in their product and here is what they had to say:

Both cod liver oil and fish body oil are oils derived from fish that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Cod liver oil is derived specifically from the liver of cod, while fish body is derived from the body of fish. Because the liver is a reservoir of Vitamin A, cod liver oil is higher in Vitamin A content than fish body oil.

The vitamin A concentrations can vary between specific brands of cod liver oil. Some manufacturers will add additional vitamin A to cod liver oil to boost Vitamin A levels. Nordic Naturals does not add additional Vitamin A. The natural vitamin A is acceptable for pets.

Because Vitamin A is fat soluble, it can accumulate in the liver and body and can have harmful effects when supplemented in excessive levels.

Pet owners should be aware of other foods or treats fed to their pets that may also provide high levels of Vitamin A (such as liver), and take all these things into consideration when evaluating the safety of their pet’s diet and additional supplements. This also applies to pet owners feeding their pets raw food diets and home-prepared diets.

Consult your veterinarian to evaluate the total amount of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin A and D your dog/puppy or cat/kitten should receive on a daily basis based on species, age, activity level, diet, life stage (growth/reproduction and adult), and health condition of your pet.

After I determined that the product would be more than safe to give Sherman I started the revew and gave him 1 teaspoon of the Pet Cod Liver Oil on his food every evening for 2 months. Sherman loves fish so I knew that he would really enjoy this, and he did.

While the results were not immediate, over time I did notice that the flaky skin that I was seeing on his back began to disappear and his coat, which was lacking in the shine department, began to glisten again.

Another thing that I noticed was his movement up the stairs.

Sherman is 5 and while this is not old for the average dog, it is getting up there for a giant breed dog, and over the winter I noticed him moving a little slower up the stairs. After about 1 month on the Nordic Naturals Pet Cod Liver Oil , I began to notice a spring in Sherman’s step going up the stairs. He was moving faster and more fluently. My husband noticed it too.

Now, can I say with 100% certainly that this was due to the cod liver oil?

No.

But I do know that over the 2 months he was on it, I made no changes in his diet.

fish oil and aple cider vinegar supplements, apple cider vinegar, cod liver oil

Question
QUESTION: Hi, I have been adding fish oil to my dogs’ dry food (Origen) and a bit of Apple cider vinegar to their water. I cannot complain about their health, they look good and healthy. However I have doubts if I can do any damage to them with these supplements even though I add them in moderation. My dogs are both beagles. Thank you in advance for your reply,
Lilia
ANSWER: Hi Lilia,

Your dogs are very cute! I always like to see pictures of them here. I have no problem with the vinegar, in very small amounts if they don’t mind it; I’m not personally convinced of it’s usefulness in the diet, but I can’t see in most cases it does any harm either.
Fish oil can be an excellent supplement; if you can tall me the brand you’re using and how much, I can comment further. With higher levels it’s prudent to add a little Vitamin E as well.

There are many supplements  like to use in addition to commercial diet and fish body oil is one of them, but the brand should be one I know well and the amount is critical. There are some conditions that contraindicate additional Omega3 (bleeding disorders) but these are rare, and your vet would have advised you about diet (I assume!)

Let me know more and I can help you more precisely.
All the best, Catherine

QUESTION: Thank you for your reply. I buy Norvegian Cod Liver Oil in Pharmacy or Bulk Store, liquid, different brands, whatever is available. I add about one coffee/tea spoon once a day to their food. Recently they both had their blood tests and they came out good, including liver enzymes. So I guess I can go on with it? Apple cider I add half of the tea spoon and not every day.

ANSWER: Good brand, but can you tell me the content per tsp? Look at the bottle and it will list EPA and DHA in milligrams. That`s what you can overdo, if you give me that information,  and their weights, I can help more precisely.

All the best, Catherine

QUESTION: it just says vitamin A -4000IU, vitamin D3 -400 IU

Answer
That’s cod liver oil, not fish oil! And you should not be adding it to kibble at all. Vitamins A and D can be toxic in high levels. Please stop using this product and find a fish BODy oil – such as salmon oil – instead.
Going off for the night but I had to answer this asap. TOO MUCH VITAMIN! Never add cod liver oil to kibble – please.

relationship between Cod Liver Oil and Constipation Explained

The association in the middle of cod liver oil and constipation is one of natural rehabilitation and ailment. In other words, cod liver oil has been used to furnish natural relief from constipation for many years. Other fish oils furnish the same benefit, without the risks that can be associated with excess consumption of cod liver oil. Both of these oils furnish considerable omega-3 fatty acids, considerable for optimal brain, heart, joint and digestive function.

Both my parents and my grandparents took quarterly doses of cod liver oil and constipation was not a problem for them. After complaining of a “tummy ache”, my mother gave me a spoonful of the nasty tasting, smelly stuff. After that, I kept my tummy aches to myself. Sure, it relieved the constipation, but “Yuck!” I could taste it for hours, every time I burped!

Fish Oil For Dogs

Today, the better fish oil supplements are molecularly distilled to remove the odor. In capsule form, they are tasteless. Storing the capsules in the freezer and/or taking them with food can prevent both the burping and any aftertaste, while still relieving occasional constipation.

Most population caress constipation occasionally. Too minute fiber in the diet is one common cause, as is too minute water. But, many other factors can lead to occasional constipation. designate medications, dietary supplements containing iron, a sedentary lifestyle, traveling or other changes in habit and stress are some of the many things that can lead to constipation.

Excessive use of stimulant laxatives can cause the eventual dysfunction of the digestive muscles, leading to chronic constipation. Most population find that even occasional use of stimulant laxatives can cause cramping and discomfort. Fish oils improve digestive function, can be taken ordinarily and are “gentler” than most over-the-counter laxatives, like Ex-Lax. Many population delineate cod liver oil and constipation prevention.

Just remember to pick wisely. All supplements are not the same. Cod liver oils include vitamin A. Pregnant women should avoid supplements containing vitamin A, as it has been associated with a considerable growth in birth defects. Too much vitamin A, in even wholesome adults can be toxic. In general, it is safer to get your daily vitamin A requirements from food or beta carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A on an as-needed basis and is therefore non-toxic.

Other concerns over cod liver oil consumption are associated to mercury contamination and contamination from other industrial pollutants. Mercury is stored in the livers of fish. Thus, there is a greater occasion of mercury contamination in oils that come from fish livers. The source of most cod liver oils is the Atlantic Cod fish, which has been over harvested and swims in some of the most polluted waters in the world.

Fish oils derived from the “flesh” of the fish are generally safer alternatives. But, it is still considerable to pick carefully. Some oils are not molecularly distilled and include mercury and other contaminants. And, if you are concerned about environmental issues, some fish are over harvested and their populations are not determined sustainable. Manufacturers should list the “source fish” (cod, shark, salmon, etc.), the distillation process used and the ocean from which the fish is harvested, but most do not.

N101 Blog » Cod Liver Oil

We all love our pets and want to make sure that they live long, healthy lives. Sadly, many of the pet products that are commonly sold on the market lack the full amount of nutrients that cats and dogs need to maintain proper health. One of the best things that we can do to help supplement these nutrients into our pet’s diet is to give them a daily dose of cod liver oil which is loaded with nutrients that are beneficial to pets.

What is Cod Liver Oil?

For hundreds of years people have used cod liver oil for it’s nutritional benefits to humans. In the past century, pet suppliers have also harnessed the power of this supplement to provide additional nutrition to pets after a man named Edward Mellanby performed research that found cod liver oil could be beneficial to pets with arthritis.

Cod liver oil is an oil that is retrieved from fish. The oil is loaded with vitamins A and D, and also contains omega-3 fatty acids that are not only excellent for pets with arthritis as Mellanby speculated, but also in other areas of pet health as well.

Pet Health Benefits of Cod Liver Oil

The nutritional value of cod liver oil helps to provide joint support which can indeed help as a treatment for pets that suffer from arthritis. However, supplementing cod liver oil into your pet’s diet from an early age can also prevent arthritis from occurring because it helps to keep joints loose and limber.

Cod liver oil is good for all pets, but should definitely be given to some breeds of dogs that are more prone to developing joint disorders as it can help to prevent the joint problems from occurring. It is also highly beneficial to both cats and dogs that are older and may be beginning to experience stiffness in their hips and legs after sleeping.

Working dogs can benefit from a cod liver oil supplement because it also helps to provide the dog with a natural energy booster. But be warned, older pets that have become more sedentary and lazy may suddenly start running around and acting young again thanks to the energy this supplement provides!

Finally, cod liver oil also helps to provide a healthy coat and skin for your pet. Many people do not realize it, but having a healthy coat and skin is important to your pets health because it prevents serious skin and coat conditions from occurring that can actually affect your pets overall health.

Purchasing Cod Liver Oil for Pets

When purchasing a cod liver oil supplement for your pets, look for a quality supplement that contains no additives and has been distilled to produce a pure oil, such as the Pet Cod Liver Oil from Nordic Naturals that is safe for use in both cats and dogs. Just a small dosage of the oil added to your pets food daily will provide them with the additional nutrients that they need and help to keep them healthy and strong for many years.

Cod liver oil is a nutritional supplement derived from the liver of cod fish, and it is chalked full of omega 3 fatty acids, as well as vitamins A, D, and E. Long ago the needs for such supplements were not necessary because people lived off of the land and actually ate whole foods that were extremely beneficial to the body. The meat they ate was usually wild, such as fish caught fresh from a river or some sort of red meat grazing free on a range. Now days, our food is full of preservatives, and so chemically altered that the goodness has long disappeared. We now eat for survival and filling, and we must supplement for health because our food is basically left worthless in this area.

Obviously, from the name you can tell that fish are considered the number one source of Omega fatty acids. However, in our modern society many people are steering clear of fish due to the mercury and pollutants that are thought to be in the meat. There are still hundreds of thousands of people that do eat fish, the problem is that these fish are raised on large commercial fish farms and lack the fatty acids, because of poor diets and over crowding. Fatty acids are completely essential to the body, yet they are not manufactured in our bodies, so we must eat them, to get them. It is estimated that 90-95% of the population is deficient, and this may be the explanation for our high numbers of disease and sickness.

So why not just take a fish oil supplement??

This is an easy question to answer, the difference between cod liver oil and regular fish oil are vitamins. Cod liver oil is a great source of vitamins A, D, and E while regular fish oil is not. You can think of cod liver oil as fish oil with benefits, and many people switch between regular fish oil in the summer and cod liver oil in the fall and winter. This switching is a great option for people who get plenty of sun exposure during the summer and not much in the winter. However, if you are restricted from the sunlight, for whatever reason, sticking to a cod liver oil supplement throughout the year is best.

Everyone can benefit from a daily cod liver oil supplement this is because, cod liver oil is one of those all around good for you supplements, that benefit everyone from your kids to your grandma and everybody in between. It so easy to take a supplement there is really no reason to not take one, most defiantly one that possesses as many health benefits as this!
