I always feel like one of those “snake oil peddlers” of old when I talk about the “wonders” of Omega 3 fatty acids, as if it’s the “cure-all” for everything under the sun, but I do indeed like this supplement. A lot. Fish oil is the most commonly recommended supplement for both dogs and people. Fish oil is a rich source of the omega 3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA.
Omega 3 fatty acids are thought to have anti-inflammatory properties, as opposed to omega 6 fatty acids which tend to be pro-inflammatory. The typical American diet for people is high in omega 6 fatty acids and low in omega 3 fatty acids. Because both fatty acids compete to be metabolized in the body, decreasing your intake of omega 6 fatty acids and increasing your intake of omega 3 fatty acids is helpful. However, no one is certain of exactly what the proper ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids is. Currently its recommended that it be < 2.5:1.
Other benefits of omega 3 fatty acids include increased blood flow characteristics helping those with heart disease or at risk for stroke. Fish oil may help reduce side effects from chemotherapy. Fish oil may be helpful in inflammatory bowel disease by reducing inflammation. Fish oil may lower triglyceride levels, and “bad” cholesterol. Fish oil may help protect the gastrointestinal tract from damage and side effects of non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (those drugs often used for pain control.) Fish oil helps with skin disorders and allergies as well.
Fish oil derived from cold water fish (salmon, mackeral, sardine, anchovy, or herring) is preferred as it results in higher levels of EPA and DHA. Dosing is based on the amounts of EPA and DHA, as well as the pet’s condition and risk factors. Plant sources of omega 3 fatty acids have to be metabolized into EPA and DHA and so tend not to work as well as the fish sources. It may take 4-6 months to see improvement with fish oil so I often recommend it be used year-round.
With so meny benefits and very little risk, who can dispute the “wonders” of my fish oil tonic!

A Dog and Fish Story: The Importance of Omega 3s in Your Dogâs Diet

Holy mackerelâit seems every aisle in the grocery store is crowded with human foods enhanced with omega 3s. We know why: itâs good for the heart, the brain, the skin, the joints . . . so, do the same benefits apply to dogs? And if so, whatâs the best source of omega 3 fatty acids for our furry friends?
One reason itâs so important for humans to consume omega 3s is that they are not produced by the body. Thatâs why they are called essential oils. The same is true of your canine companion. Your dog gets omega 3s only if he eats them.
Omega 3s have long been given to dogs (and cats for that matter) to improve coat. Research and practice shows that there are many more benefits for concerns such as:
- arthritis
- brain health
- immune system
- neural development of puppies
- allergies
- skin and coat
You may have noticed that many dog foods contain omega 3 fatty acids. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind. The first is that you want to make sure that the omega 3s come from fish and fish oil not vegetable oil. The vegetable sources donât convert well and are much less effective. The other concern is that the balance between omega 3 fatty acids and omega 6 fatty acids should be 2:1. The ratio in bagged pet food is often the reverse because the kibble is full of grain and cereal. One easy remedy there is to use grain free foods enhanced with fish oil. Or, as we have chosen, you can feed your dogs a raw diet.
What if you use a bagged food enhanced with omega 3 fish oil but you still see issues with your dogâs arthritis, allergies, coat or skin?
Itâs time for fish or fish oil supplements.
If you choose to feed fish to your dog, please choose your fish wisely. We feed a raw diet and include 6Ⳡlong wild caught sardines. Although we still supplement with fish oil pills, we also like feeding a small, whole, raw fish. In order to minimize toxins like PCBs and mercury, choose wild caught fish and consult with fish safety lists like this one: http://www.edf.org/page.cfm?tagID=17694
A little bit more . . .
We also supplement with fish oil pills because we notice a lot of health improvements with just a little bit more fish oil. We especially see this in increased pliability of our old girlâs joints and increased sheen in all the dogsâ coats. Just as fish is often contaminated, fish oil supplements are often contaminated as well. This list analyzes the safety of fish oil supplements http://www.edf.org/page.cfm?tagID=16536 HOWEVER, they recommend several that have recently been sued because of PCB contamination. So please, do your due diligence and cross-reference your supplement choices. To read more about the fish oils mentioned in the March 3, 2010 lawsuit, follow this link: http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=363337
Guaranteed Purity
If, like me, you just want a supplement you know you can trust . . . from a company that guarantees purity, then I recommend Shakleeâs Omegaguard. Shaklee guarantees purity and goes above and beyond to do so. Experts recommend fish oil that is molecularly distilled. Shakleeâs goes through triple molecular distillation. Experts also recommend fish oil made from small fish with short life spans. Shakleeâs is made from small, deep cold water fish with short life spans (they are less likely to absorb toxins). And Shaklee is a 54 year old leader in the natural nutrition industry and known for its integrity in science.
Just one serving (three softgels) of Omegaguard delivers 1000 mg of fish oil:  545 mg of EPA and 360 mg of DHA. My dogs love them so much that they come running every time I open my vitamin chest! They eat them whole and pop them with their teeth, getting a yummy mouthful of pure fish oil. I guess you have to be a dog to appreciate that.
Omegaguard is available at http://lifespring.myshaklee.com/us/en/products.php?sku=20244
Whatever source you choose, as long as itâs a pure, contaminant-free fish oil, your pooch will thank you!

Commonly Asked Questions about Omega 3 Fatty Acids and Fish Oil Supplements:
Q. Why does my veterinarian recommend a specific fish oil supplement for my pet? Why canât I use just any over-the-counter fish oil supplement?
A. Not all Fish Oil Supplements are created equal. Unfortunately, the FDA does not regulate any nutritional supplements that we use for us or our pets. Sadly, some over-the-counter supplements have been shown to have heavy metal contaminants, and sometimes even little to none of the listed ingredients actually in the product! Some product labels do not even tell you exactly how much EPA or DHA is per serving- they only give you a general percentage of an unknown amount! Even carefully reading the label does not guarantee you are getting what your are promised.
Q. What makes OmegaQD a better choice for my pet?
A.- Our recommended serving size is 32-37mg/kg body weight/day based on current medical research and veterinary specialistsâ recommended doses. That is at least double and triple the suggested serving size of many other veterinary fish oil products.
And, because OmegaQD is so concentrated, your pet needs only small amounts of powder daily to reach higher amounts of EPA/DHA.(1/4-1/2 teaspoon to a small dog/cat) and still have the higher quantities much less actually have much more product to give your pet per container at these higher recommended amounts.
OmegaQD has been tested free of heavy metals, mercury, PCBâs, AND salmonella and E.Coli.
OmegaQD lists exact ingredients and amounts on the label for you to easily decide what is best for your pet.
The Recommended Serving Size listed on the Label is 32-37 mg/kg/day
You can smell the freshness! If your pet does not like fish, then he/she may not readily accept this product formulated with fish oil from sardines.
Omega3 fatty acids, EPA/DHA, also promote health for Pocket Pets and Horses.
Ask your veterinarian for more details.
Questions and Answers about Omega 3 Fatty Acids and Fish Oil Supplements:
Q. What are Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) and what do I need to know about them?
A. The two main groups of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs) are Omega 6 and Omega 3. These are considered Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) because humans and other mammals cannot make these, so they need to be eaten in the diet. Generally, Omega 3s (EPA, DHA, ALA) are anti-inflammatory, and Omega 6s (LA, AA) are pro-inflammatory in the body (Omega 6, GLA, is an exception.). Most fatty acids are obtained from fish, crustaceans, and some vegetables.
Q. What are the Essential Fatty Acids (EFAâs) – Omega 3âs and Omega 6âs?
A. Omega 3âs can be obtained from Fish/Marine Oils in the form of EPA and DHA.
The Omega 3 from plant sources (such as flax seed, soy, walnuts) is in the form of ALA (Alpha-Linoleic Acid). This Omega 3, ALA, cannot be used by the body in that form. Mammals (including humans, dogs and cats) have only a small amount of the enzymes needed and convert only 5 â 10% of the ALA in plants into EPA that the body can actually use. Also, recent studies have shown that cats in particular cannot convert 18 carbon chain fatty acids, such as ALA, at all. Flaxseed, a popular nutritional supplement, is an excellent fiber source with other healthy nutritional benefits, but seems to be an inefficient way for the body to obtain the Omega 3s it can use.
Q. What are sources of Omega 3s?
A. Omega 3s are found in marine/fish and plant sources. The best source of Omega 3s is fish oil. Plant-based sources such as flaxseed contain ALA (Alpha Linoleic Acid). This Omega 3 is not used by the body in this form and must be converted to EPA. Unfortunately, the body has only small amounts of the needed enzymes and can only convert 5-10% of the ALA into the EPA the body can use. This makes obtaining Omega 3s from plants very inefficient.
Q. Most products list how much fish oil is in each serving. Is that number important? What is the difference between that Fish Oil Concentration and the Essential Fatty Acids, EPA/DHA, in each serving? How do I know how much is in the product?
A. The listed Fish Oil concentration is often listed as 1,000mg to 1,200mg per serving (capsule, or liquid âpumpâ), and refers to the amount of actual fish oil used per serving. The Essential Fatty Acids (EPA/DHA) are within that fish oil and are usually listed in the supplement facts box on the back of the label.
Q. How do I compare Omega 3 fish oil supplements and decide which one to use?
A. Here is a quick list of what to find on the label:
-Make sure the amounts of EPA and DHA are listed separately per serving.
The actual amount of the fish oil (which is often 1,000mg or 1,200mg per serving) tells you how much fish oil is used per serving to give you the EPA and DHA amounts. This fish oil amount does not help you figure out what you need. Look on the back of the label.
You want to know the specific EPA and DHA amounts in milligrams (mg) per serving. Often, there is âOther Omega 3sâ listed on the label. You would not count these to determine how much you need.
Note: A percentage amount is sometimes used. Make sure you can find the actual milligram (mg) amount of the overall fish oil per serving to make the calculation. It is sometimes not listed, which means you would not be able to determine the actual amounts of EPA or DHA in each serving size. (The FDA does not mandate that companyâs tell you exact amounts in the product.).
Also, look at the serving size amount. The each serving size may actually be 2 or 3 capsules daily or larger amounts of liquid than expected. This may be misleading at first. Read carefully.
- Make sure that the Omega 3 EPA/DHA source is fish oil. Avoid plant sources of Omega 3s, listed as ALA (Alpha Linoleic Acid), such as flaxseed oil. The body can only convert about 5-10% of that ALA into the usable Omega3, EPA.
- Look for statements that the fish oil has been third-party tested free of heavy metals and other contaminants.
- Avoid products that added or include Omega 6s, listed as LA (Linoleic Acid). The regular food diets already have mostly Omega 6s; the body needs more Omega 3s to make up for this.. If there are vegetable oils in the ingredients, they are the source of Omega 6s even if the Omega 6s are not listed in the supplement facts box.
- Check expiration dates, âuse byâ dates, and recommended storage of the product. Fish oils usually have to be refrigerated and have shorter âuse byâ dates which are often 30days after being opened.
- OUR RETURN POLICY: Can you return the product if your pet just wonât or canât eat the large capsules or oils? Most products do not offer a return for this reason.
- Is the product made in the USA? It is common that the company is actually based in another country, such as Canada or France, but is only being âdistributed byâ a company set up in the USA.
What ways can Omega 3âs and Omega 6âs be obtained in the diet?
What are the differences between Omega 3, and Omega 6 Fatty Acids?
Q. Is the Omega 6 to Omega 3 ratio important?
A. Yes. Daily diets are almost exclusively Omega 6s with no Omega 3s, unless fish or fish oil has been added to the diet. Thus, there is an excess of Omega 6s. A recommended ratio of Omega 6 and Omega 3 in the diet is 5:1 to 10:1 (Omega 6:Omega 3) This dietary ratio helps support a less inflammatory environment in the body. Since the natural daily diet contains almost all Omega 6s, Omega 3s need to be specifically added. It is also strongly recommended that a low fat diet be fed to help offset the excess Omega 6s found in commercial foods.
Q. Is there a best source of Omega 3s?
A. A marine oil- fish oil- source of Omega 3s seems to be the most efficiently used source of EPA/DHA for the body. Marine oil/fish oil sources that can be third party tested appear to be the best. They can be verified to have the label-claim ingredients and concentrations and to be free of heavy metals and contaminants. OmegaQD gives this to you!
Q. If flaxseed has been added to my petâs diet, isnât there enough Omega 3s?
A. No.
Q. What are my options to giving my pet Fish Oil?
Before OmegaQD powder, there were only large capsules or oils that used a pump that often leaks or has an unpleasant odor. Many popular veterinary fish oil products suggest daily serving sizes much less (often only 9 -20 mg/kg body weight/day) than what many veterinarians recommend feeding your pet. This means you need to at least double or triple the labeled serving amounts of many fish oil products to reach the higher amounts every day based on current medical research or individual patient responses. This often means giving your 60# dog with arthritis 6 to 8 capsules or several mls of liquid, or giving your small dog or cat 2 or more large capsules or more than a teaspoon of liquid every day.
Q. How much Omega 3s, EPA/DHA does my pet need?
A. Your veterinarian can help you determine this amount. The current recommended daily âdosesâ of Omega 3s by many veterinary specialists seem to be based on both empirical dosages of Omega 3 EFAs, EPA/DHA used in current medical research studies and their own patientsâ clinical outcomes.
Those amounts range from:
30-40 mg/kg body weight/day (or sometimes calculated as 180mg EPA/ 5kg body weight/day) for supportive maintenance to 60-90mg/kg body weight/day for clinical use in animals with arthritis, knee injuries, other joint pain, chronic skin and ear infections, heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease to 100mg and higher/kg body weight/day for cancer patients.
A. Omega 3s EPA/DHA from fish oil continue to be studied in detail by both human and animal medical researchers as a health-promoting nutritional supplement for several medical conditions.
For example, just this year, studies in the Journal of American Vertinary Medical Association (JAVMA) reported that Omega 3 supplements, when combined with a healthy diet, maintain increased activity levels and mobility while decreasing the use of arthritis pain medications in dogs.

Fish Oil for Dogs
Fish oil for dogs
contains omega-3 fatty acids has long been touted as having huge benefits for human consumption. Some of the many benefits attributed to fish oil containing omega-3 fatty acids include possible reduction of risks of certain cancers, reduction of high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and beneficial impact on certain heart conditions. Currently, studies are being conducted to determine whether there is a positive impact on patients suffering from clinical depression and elderly patients exhibiting Alzheimer symptoms. Another major benefit of fish oil is a noticeable improvement to hair condition. But if this medical supplement is good for humans, can it have the same benefits for dogs? Is it safe to provide this type of supplement to pets?
Is it dangerous to give dogs oil supplements intended for human consumption?
In many instances, medications which are formulated for humans should not be given to dogs. In the case of these supplements, the supplement is fine for consumption by most dogs. In cases where a dog suffers from some sort of chronic health issue, it is recommended that a veterinarian be consulted before putting the dog on any regimen supplementation.
What are the benefits of taking fish oils?
One of the major benefits of the daily use of supplements for dogs is to alleviate the symptoms of canine allergies. Many dogs suffer from some sort of allergic dermatitis, and fish oil has been shown to decrease scratching caused by skin inflammation and irritation. Reduction of scratching will also help alleviate skin irritability and redness, and improve the condition of the dogâs skin.
Daily use of these supplements may also enhance the appearance of the dogâs coat, as it strengthens and softens the hair shafts. The dogâs coat will retain moisture, lending it a glossier appearance.
Other possible benefits to fish oil dog supplements
Ongoing medical studies are now being conducted to determine whether fish oil usage will produce additional benefits. It may improve kidney function, alleviate arthritis and lower cholesterol. Since fish oil supplements are believed to improve brain function in Alzheimer patients, it is also believed that they may improve brain function in older dogs. These supplements may also provide improve the dogâs immune system and cardiac health. Veterinarians are now recommending that dogs with cancer be placed on daily fish oil supplementation, as it is believed the omega-3 fatty acids slow the growth of cancer cells.
What is the proper dosage of fish oils?
Pet food stores often carry capsules made specifically for dogs; in such instances, it is easy to determine the proper dosage for a dog. If using capsules formulated for humans, the pet owner will need to determine the correct dosage for their dog. A veterinarian can assist pet owners in determining the proper dosage for their dog based upon weight.
Fish oil and how to feed this supplement to dogs
In many cases, adding the capsule to a dogâs food can be accomplished without the dog noticing the difference. In the case of a picky eater, however, the fish oil capsule can actually be punctured and the contents mixed in directly with the dogâs food. Another method which may prove effective is to hide the capsule in a piece of cheese or coat it with peanut butter.
Fish oil for dogs
Are there any negative effects of fish oil?
Some dogs are very sensitive to dietary changes, and may experience loose stools when placed on supplements. If this condition continues, discontinue the fish oil capsules and consult a veterinarian. It may be necessary to start the dog on a lower dose of fish oil to allow the dogâs digestive system to accommodate the increased fatty acids.

Pet Health Facts: Omega Fatty Acids
By the Drs4pets Team
Fat is the primary source of energy for your pet. The fats in food are made up of omega fatty acids, important nutrients in your petâs diet. Not only are certain fatty acids essential for life, they also play critical roles in optimal health and vitality.
All foods contain omega-6 fatty acids. Linoleic acid is one of the omega-6 fatty acids, and is considered an essential nutrient. One of the key roles this fatty acid plays is to maintain the proper moisture balance in the skinâs surface. This is critical for maintaining a barrier between the outside world and the inner workings of the body.
Omega-3 fatty acids come from ingredients such as marine sources (fish oil or fish meal) and also from vegetable or plant sources (flaxseed or algae). While alpha-linolenic acid is the only omega-3 fatty acid that is truly considered to be an essential nutrient, it is likely that others in this important group will make the list soon. Omega-3 fatty acids, such as DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), have been found to be critical for good health. DHA is important for the proper development of cognitive function and vision in young animals, and EPA has powerful anti-inflammatory effects. Omega-3 fatty acids can diminish inflammation in the joints, skin and digestive system and may even help fight or prevent cancer.
It is important to feed a pet food that contains a blend of omega fatty acids to support optimal skin and coat condition, proper immune function and to control inflammation throughout the body. Looking at the label for sources of these critical nutrients, as well as checking the Guaranteed Analysis for the guaranteed levels, will help ensure that your petâs diet contains omega fatty acids for optimal health.
Question: How can I tell if my petâs food has omega fatty acids?
Answer: Reputable brands will guarantee the levels of omega fatty acids in the guaranteed analysis. Look for words such as omega-6 fatty acids, linoleic acid, omega-3 fatty acids or alpha-linolenic acid in the list of nutrient guarantees. This will prove that not only is it in the food, it is guaranteed to be there at a specific amount.
Question: Should I give my dog a fish oil supplement for his dry skin?
Answer: It would be a good idea to check with your veterinarian first. If the food that you are feeding has a balance of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, a supplement may not be beneficial. There may be another explanation for the dry skin. Sometimes, additional supplements can lead to loose stools.
Question: My cat loves tuna fish. Can I feed this to her for the fatty acids?
Answer: It is important to feed a balanced diet to your cat. An occasional treat is ok, but be cautious. Cats can be finicky and may choose treats over their regular food, leading to dietary imbalances and deficiencies.

Animals Evolved » Blog Archive » Can Omega 3 Fish Oils Stop Aggression in Dogs?
Although most dogs are docile and loving, particularly towards their family, some dogs can be aggressive towards other dogs and even towards humans who arenât a part of their pack. This sort of aggression can cause problems for both dog and human if not corrected. Although most interventions designed to stop aggression in dogs centers around behavior training, a study shows that the problem could be at least partially physiological. One proposed cause of aggression in dogs may be a deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids.
Although much has been written about the importance of omega-3 fatty acids in terms of human health, less is known about its effects in dogs. These fatty acids, found most commonly in fish oil, have been shown to lower triglyceride levels in humans as well as play a role in reducing the risk of heart disease. Whatâs less known is that a deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids may play a role in some forms of human psychological illnesses such as depression, illustrating the importance that omega-3âs play in brain health.
A study published in a veterinary journal in 2007 looked at blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids in dogs that were known to be aggressive compared to those who didnât exhibit aggressive behavior. To the surprise of the researchers, it was found that dogs who manifested aggression had lower levels of omega 3âs in their blood compared to well behaved, less aggressive dogs. Could low levels of omega 3âs be a correctable cause of aggression in dogs? Interestingly, studies of aggressive human prisoners have also shown deficiencies in omega-3 fatty acids. Itâs thought that omega-3 fatty acids may play an important role in the function of brain cells by stabilizing the cell membrane.
While it may be premature to attribute all cases of aggression in dogs to an omega 3 deficiency, increasing the amount of these fatty acids your dog receives in his diet could have a positive impact on both his behavior and his health. Because the dose to potentially stop aggression in dogs hasnât been well established, itâs best to check with your vet to find the amount thatâs right for your particular dog. Not only can the addition of fish oils possibly stop aggression in dogs, it may also have beneficial effects on your dogâs heart and can reduce the pain and inflammation of arthritis.
Many pet stores and pet supply catalogs carry special fish oil supplements for dogs. If the right dose is selected, you could also use fish oil supplements designed for humans, but always check with your veterinarian first.

Give Your Health the Boost It Needs with Omega Daily
Life in our modern times is easier than it ever has been in terms of the amount of sheer physical labor we are required to do compared with centuries ago and it is certainly easier in terms of the amount of fighting just to survive that we had to do millennia ago. These facts do hold up, but have you ever wondered what happened to the quality of our years? Are they any better just because we get more of them to go through from the cradle to the inevitable end we all face? To be sure, there are a great number of challenges that each person faces today which would never have existed even a few decades ago. We are bombarded with all sorts of electronic distractions and reasons to spend more time on the couch eating convenient foods and less time out on the planet that we inhabit. There are two sides to every coin and it turns out that much of what makes life easier for us today is also what makes it difficult to live though while maintaining the proper health that would have been the natural result of normal daily activities and diet only a few centuries ago.
So how do we make up for these changes and bring our quality of life back to the level that we want it to be? The answer is simpler than it might sound and once we discover what it is, we are going to have a very easy time making some changes. Why You Need It
Heard of inflammation? Of course you have. But you may not be familiar with the ailments caused by chronic inflammation and the havoc it wreaks.
Inflammation is your body’s very complex reaction to injury, be it from physical, chemical or biological origins.
In moderation, inflammation is good. It’s the process by which your body sends reinforcements to an injured area, with increased blood flow and white blood cells to heal the trauma.
The trouble is, high stress levels and/or ongoing injuries shift inflammation into overdrive. Capillaries dilate, dozens of chemical reactions occur and inflammation attacks your healthy tissues…
Do you have ongoing stress in your life? An injury that lingers?
Then you’re probably familiar with the next part. Chronic inflammation, from ongoing stress levels and recurring trauma to the body can lead to tissue damage and organ dysfunction.
It starts out as pain and stiffness in the joints. Left alone, chronic inflammation gets worse, and can develop into:
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Osteoarthritis
- Destruction of the Immune System
- Anaphylactic Shock
Chronic inflammation is serious health concern that can damage the body, cause ongoing pain and lower your quality of life.
Now stop…hear the call of the seagulls and the gentle lapping of waves. Smell that salt in the air…

Animal Essentials Fish Oil Plus, Omega 3 Supplement for Dogs & Cats (90 Capsules) Overview
Essential fatty acids (commonly called EFAs) are fat based nutrients that every mammal needs to maintain healthy function and structure of smooth muscle organs (heart/reproductive system), to protect and build liver cells, and to maintain healthy skin, coat and strong joint tissues. They have also been linked to retinal development and antioxidant activities, and they are responsible for the synthesis and modulation of various biochemicals that serve as mediators of the bodys various physiologic processes. In other words, if a body does not receive sufficient amounts of EFAs critical body functions can be severely disrupted. Dogs and cats that are deficient in EFAs typically develop chronic skin and coat disorders, digestive problems, cardiovascular disease, degenerative eye disease, and allergies. Even animals who show no obvious signs of chronic disease will often display dramatic benefits from an EFA-enriched diet very quickly. A shinier and softer coat, less shedding, healthier skin, fewer fleas, and better tolerance to flea bites and other allergens can be seen within just a few weeks of first feeding.

We do not have to do a total life make over or go live in the woods in order to get the better health we crave from generations ago. In fact, we can enjoy the benefits of today while learning and borrowing from the secrets of ages past. Fish Oil For Dogs - K9 Omega
Fish Oil and Chemotherapy: DHA omega-3 may improve chemotherapy outcomes
Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Boxer Dogs with Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy
K9 Omega⢠is the top quality fish oil supplement for dogs available today. Highly concentrated and purified blend of Omega 3 fatty acids, properly balanced for canine needs, K9 Omega⢠helps support optimum cellular repair during cancer treatment. This supplement was formulated from all cold water fish sources, using oil from salmon, anchovy, herring, sprat and sardines, with natural vitamin E to enhance freshness. Unlike most human grade products, there are no flavors or fillers added, so feeding is easy. (Stinky, fishy smell – dogs LOVE it!)
These softgels can be fed as treats once the dog knows what they contain, or the capsules can be opened and the oil squeezed out on the dog’s food. Dosage is 1 softgel per 20 lbs body weight per day. Price is $ 9.95 for a bottle of 60 softgels containing a full 1000 mg of fish oil concentrate each. Why use a human product when this is formulated specially for dogs?
Effects of Fish Oil on Dogs Health
1. Fish oils have long been suggested for dogs suffering from allergies, as they reduce irritation as well improve the condition of the coat. But the effects of fish oils on dogs’ health are now being recognized as being far more widespread, with implications for other ailments such as heart disease, high cholesterol, kidney failure, arthritis and cancer.
Heart Disease
 2. Many of the diseases dogs suffer are the same as those of humans, and heart disease is one of them. Dogs that are overweight, or do not get sufficient exercise, can experience the same heart conditions as people. And, just like humans, fish oils can help to ameliorate the condition Fish oils contain fatty acids, omega-3 and omega-6, and while both are beneficial, the omega-3s provide the main benefits. They reduce the triglycerides (the fats in blood), as well as lowering blood pressure and decreasing the rate of accumulation of arterial plaque.
 High Cholesterol
3. Elevated cholesterol levels (hyperlipidermia) in dogs is caused by a build-up of fat in the bloodstream. Although this does not carry the same threat of heart disease as it does in humans, it can cause other health problems. The fats are produced naturally by the liver as part of the digestive system, but if too much fat is produced it will cause high cholesterol levels. According to a study carried out by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Uludag,in Turkey (and reported by “The Journal of Small Animal Practice” in March 2009), one possible indication of high cholesterol is a tendency for tail chasing–an obsessive compulsive disorder. Body fish oils have been shown to reduce triglycerides and cholesterol.
Renal Failure
4. Chronic kidney failure is another common problem in dogs, and it is often associated with cancer or heart disease. In some cases, the drugs used to treat those conditions have the undesirable side effect of undermining kidney function. The fatty acids from fish oil can slow the progression of kidney disease, and at the same time the oil’s anti-inflammatory properties can reduce inflammation of the kidneys.
 Arthritis
5. The omega fatty acid EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) has anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce the pain and discomfort associated with arthritis, colitis and cystitis. In these cases, the relief certainly is beneficial, but fish oil does not actually treat the condition–although it may reduce the effect of the enzymes that damage cartilage in degenerative arthritis. A 2002 study by Dr. James K. Roush at Kansas State University’s Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital found that dogs suffering from osteoarthritis, who were given supplements with fatty acids, “felt better.”
Cancer
6. Cancer is now the leading cause of death in dogs and often attributed to the commercially produced diets they are fed. Omega-3 fatty acids have been found to have beneficial results both in preventing and curing cancer.
Â
Warning
7. The fish oil recommended for health benefits is the body oil of fish such as wild salmon, trout, tuna, sardines, menhaden and herring. If fish liver oil (such as cod liver oil) is used instead, and the dog is eating a commercially produced diet, there is a danger of overdosing it on vitamins A and D, with potentially serious consequences.
