Can I tell you about something important not just for  our pets, but for people, too?
I heard a lecture this weekend by a scientist from BIODROGA, a company that processes fish oil for Trilogy International, whose pet products are marketed under the HealthyPetNet line. Prior to this, I was a fish oil fan but wasnât overly concerned about ratings or quality, it was more about the money to me.Â
Like you, Iâve read articles in magazines and newspapers that assure us that fish oil is safe. So I just assumed that every brand on the market was pretty much the same.
All that is changed, now! Because I found out that if Iâm buying anything less than an International Fish Oil Standards (IFOS)  five-star fish oil, Iâm essentially buying the REJECTS from any of the five-star companies! Anything less than a five star âexceptionalâ  quality is either âvery goodâ, âgoodâ, âfairâ, or âpoorâ. Â
You think you are okay with a âvery goodâ or âgoodâ? Read on and see what is MISSING when you accept a product of that quality.
The International Fish Oil Standards (IFOS) were created by the University of Guelph to address the growing concern over contaminated fish oil  supplements.Â
Participation in the International Fish Oil Standards is voluntary. Manufacturers are not required to have their products tested. In order to be sure that the product you are about to order meets the strictest standards for purity, visit the manufacturerâs website. They should provide a link to their Certificate of Analysis or COA. It should be current and list the omega3 DHA, EPA and DPA content.
Fish oil is tested for stability (as an oil, it can go rancid); contaminants such as mercury, PCB, dixoins, and furans;Â and heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, nickel and lead.
Let me just ask you⦠Which one of these standards do you want to skip? Because going for less than a five-star product means that you gave up at least ONE of these criteria:
Star 1 â Product Passes All CRN/WHO Testing Categories
Star 2 â Product Tests Show Minimum 60 per cent EPA plus DHA combined concentration
Star 3 â Oxidation Level Less Than 75 per cent of CRN Standard
Star 4 â PCB Levels Less Than 50 per cent of CRN Standard
Star 5 â Dioxin and Furan Levels Less Than 50 per cent of WHO Standard
So the rating is defined as follows:
5 Star â Exceptional Product Batch
4 Star â Very Good Batch
3 Star â Good Batch
2 Star â Fair Batch
1 Star â Poor Batch
By the way, this explains why, for your PETS, you might want to go with more of a âmade for humansâ product rather than one made for veterinary purposes.Â
Iâm not going to leave you dangling. Itâs real easy to find out which products have a five-star rating.  The IFOS 5 Star Reports are online and companies which achieve this rating publish that certification on their websites.Â
Here is the IFOS 5 Star Report.
Some of the five-star companies are:
- Ocean Essence
- Platinum Naturals
- Renew Life
- Rebound
- See Yourself Well
- Trilogy (SeaLogix)
- Zone Labs
Choosing YOUR fish oil is going to come down to price and availability. Can I tell you the SeaLogix price? If you buy it on autoship or as a wholesale customer or independent rep, the price for 120 1000-mg capsules is $ 36.95. Thatâs 51 cents per 1000 mg.Â
So now, compare to YOUR brand or the one you were thinking of buying. Trilogy publishes a cost comparison chart here. Youâll see a number of popular brands on it, including Carlson, Nordic Naturals, Barleanâs, and Perricone. Price per 1000 mg on that chart ranges from 51 cents per 1000 mg to $ 3.33.Â
You will want to evaluate all of the benefits of these products, but after doing some homework, I hope you will see the value in sticking with Five Star fish oils!
